What is Firstlight The K Club? Firstlight The K Club is the finest shared ownership offering in Europe. Incorporating some of Ireland's premier properties nestled amongst two championship golf courses and complemented by Ireland's only AA Five Red Star Hotel and Resort. An Extraordinary Place In History From the moment you arrive at The K Club, it is clear this is no ordinary place. Few other resorts in the world command the same immediate espect and reverence as that of The K Club. It's a reputation that personal experience does nothing to diminish. For almost 1,500 years this extraordinary place has been coveted and fought over and although the K Club itself is a recent addition to the landscape, there have been magnificent residences here for hundreds of years and much of the hotel that now stands here dates back to the early 19th century. That much is apparent in both the glorious splendour of the main Straffan House Hotel and the attention to detail that has gone into the decor, restoration and design of this beautiful building. The K Club is a place of real historical significance and an authentic taste of Irish heritage. The location itself could not be better for exploring the surrounding Kildare landscape. From the imposing and dramatic Wicklow Mountains National Park with peaks blanketed in heath and open vistas interrupted only by forestry plantations, to the beautiful valleys and lowlands that surround The K Club and provide the perfect environment for country sports and leisurely reflection. Fast-flowing streams descend into the deep lakes of the wooded valleys and continue their course into the surrounding countryside, carving out a landscape that has inspired poets and left a legacy of a picture perfect Ireland. In addition the close proximity of Dublin ensures the vibrancy of one of Europe's most intriguing cities is never far away and for the horse racing lover, the National Stud and the home of Irish horse racing, the Curragh are within easy reach. Few locations in Ireland occupy a better place in terms of location, history and prestige than that of the legendary K Club. Tir na Meala is Irish and translates into “Land of Honey”. The B+B is a former honey farm and there are still active beehives on the grounds. A local artist (Pauline Dodds) painted the four seasons of beekeeping on the ceiling of the guest used library. The house is under German-Irish management and has a friendly and comfortable interior. Each of the five guestrooms is dedicated to a specific colour and has it’s own bathroom. Guests are also welcome to relax in the peaceful environment of the library and the natural garden with two nature ponds. You may find the dining room one of your favourite places as we emphasise organic and wholesome food, both very tasty and healthy. So, start your day with freshly made muesli out of organic grain, seeds, fresh fruit, nuts and cream, delicious pancakes with maple syrup and homemade bread out of freshly milled organic grain. Certainly you also have the option of a traditional Irish fry. We also offer evening dinner which contains products of our organic vegetable garden as well as fresh quality food from the farms around and the local butcher. You will be perfectly prepared for either exploring one of the five spectacular peninsulas of southwest Ireland or maybe a day trip to Cork City which is only 50 minutes away. There are also some picturesque towns to discover, like Dingle, Killarney, Kenmare and Bantry. Nearby you also find the famous Guagan Barra Forest Park, ideal for hiking tours. It is also the source of the river Lee where St. Finnbarr established his first monastery in the 7th century, which is a picturesque well known spiritual place with a little mountain lake and church. The B+B itself is located in the Muscrai Gaeltacht area, one of the few remaining Irish speaking regions of the country. Cultural events in Coolea include: sheep shearing competition, regular traditional Irish music pub sessions and art exhibitions. One of the four local pubs is located on the border between Cork and Kerry and is in fact the highest pub in Ireland. If you like you can also take one of our bikes out and cycle along the historic Beara Breifne Way which comes within a short distance of our B+B or just take a stroll through the beautiful country side and meet our friendly farmer neighbours who are always ready for a little chat. We also offer overnight accommodation for bikers on tour. Your bike can be stored in a safe place and we will wash your cycle gear for a fresh start next morning. Coolea is one of the rare communities in Ireland that has it's own public open air heated swimming pool, so if the weather permits why not go for a relaxing swim. Aghaboe House was finished about 1730. It was the home to the famous Irish. Antiquarian Edward Ledwich circa 1790. Ledwich was the author of Antiquities of Ireland a two volume set with spectacular woodcuts published in 1795. A pristine copy may be inspected by prior arrangement. The views of adjoining Aghaboe Abbey are enhanced at night with floodlights. The views of the nearby Slieve Bloom Mountains, winter home of Finn MacCool and the Fiana or Irish warrior class, are spectacular from the back patio and most of the bedrooms and common rooms. The newly completed motorway system in Ireland makes the central location of Aghaboe House an ideal base for touring. Nearby golf and historic attractions are plentiful. If you are looking for a real Irish Country Estate experience this is it. Large American pellet stoves keep the house warm and aired. The large oil fired AGA stove in the kitchen is an added experience. There is a separate large sitting room and a separate large dining room as well as an eat-in kitchen. The house itself was made of beautiful stone reminiscent of earlier times. The parlor was quite magnificent yet cozy. The bedrooms were surprisingly toasty. I felt like I was staying in a castle as the bedrooms were so large. It was great to be able to totally spread out. We visited the house when it was a bit chilly out but the pellet stoves made the rooms perfectly warm. I was intrigued by the kitchen as I had never used an oil-fired stove before. It worked quite well and was just as easy as using the gas and electric stoves that I am used to.
