The house was built around 1850, probably to replace the cottage which is on the other side of the the road. It has since been renovated in various stages. First by my father, who acquired the house in 1969. He had the front porch and the back room built — he made the windows himself, not bad for Ireland's leading physicist! .He also was responsible for the water scheme and for the surfacing of the road (called for a long time O' Kelly's road . I inherited the house in 1996 and have since been gradually adding improvements, the latest being the dining room off the kitchen. There is still a lot to be done, but we are getting there.. Designed for a maximum of six adults, there are three bedrooms, two with double beds and a smaller one with two single ones. There is a sofa bed in the study downstairs and Z bed upstairs for temporary guests. A bathroom serves the two upstairs bedrooms and there is a shower room ensuite for the double bedroom downstairs. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, a Godin electric cooker and a free-standing stove. The washingmachine cum dryer is in the scullery off the kitchen where there is a second fridge and a small microwave oven. The central heating is fired by wood pellets. We usually turn it off in the summer and use the electricity for the odd cold spell. There are two open fireplaces — in the sitting-room and in one of the upstairs bedrooms, for cosy evenings reading or listening to music. The television is in the study.
