Our cottage is about an hour and a half from the border with Northern Ireland, which is outside the city of Derry / Londonderry. However, there are no border guards or customs, so you don't really notice when you have crossed over (until you start seeing road signs in Irish, which means you are in the Republic). It takes about five hours to drive northwest to the cottage from Dublin airport. And it is a long day's drive north (5 hours ?), up the very picturesque west coast, from Shannon airport. Payment Policy All rates are in Euros. Special offers require immediate payment of the full sum into our bank account. Normal bookings: A firm booking will be made on receipt of a non refundable deposit of € 100, -- per week booked. The visitor is then liable for payment of the balance of the total sum due. We live in Florida, this is our Dublin home. We will visit it for about 8 weeks per year. It is a superb, hard to beat, location for walking to every major attraction in central Dublin. The flat building is located on the river Liffey a block from O'Connell Street. We overlook the well maintained inner courtyard of the flat building and the Dublin rooftops. The flat is a penthouse and, due to its location within the building, is extremely quiet and cosy. We have (December 2011) completely renovated the flat which was built in 1994. It is, effectively, new as of this date. It has 2 good size bedrooms. The master bedroom has an extemely comfortable USA king size bed with ample wardrobe and drawer space. The master bathroom has a spacious pumped shower. The second bedroom has two large very comfortable single beds and ample wardrobe space. The second bathroom has a bathtub/electric shower combination. The large living room has a 42” LED flat screen TV, a large comfortable sofa and an additional chair. There is a workdesk for laptop use. The dining area, with its leather chairs, easily accommodates 5 people. The kitchen is small but fully equiped to serve 6 people. It has induction, very fast heating, burners, a self clean oven and a powerful extraction fan. There is a large frost free refridgerator and a Bosch dishwasher. The kitchen also contains a Miele washer and dryer. There is free, fast cable internet service (connection via both cable and wi fi to your laptop). Cable TV delivers about 80 channels, many of which are international. The phone sevice offers free calling to landlines in many overseas countries and in Ireland. The 'fifth' person is accommodated via a blowup bed in the living room. The flat is located on the top, fourth, floor (fifth by North American definition) of the building. There is a lift, access to which is by key only. There is an intercom service from the flat to the front door allowing for remote door opening. The Luas (tram) service is a one block walk and within the same distance there are numerous restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. Within a 10 minute walk are Trinty College (home of the book of Kells), Grafton Street (shopping), Temple Bar (pubs) and the GPO (scene of the 1916 uprising). A 15 minute walk will get you to the Garden of Rembrance, St Stephens Green, Dublin Castle, St Patricks Cathedral and Christchurch Cathedral. The river Liffey with its boat cruises is at your front door. Within the flat building (on the ground floor) are numerous shops, including a hair salon, a supermarket and several eating places. Within a block there are large Tesco and Marks and Spencers supermarkets and the Jervis centre shopping mall. The setting, not far from the sea, is rural and peaceful: Mount Gabriel stands to the west, hills and forestry are behind (to the north), just over the hill are Dunmanus Bay and Bantry Bay. To the east is the vibrant market town of Skibbereen and to the west the village of Schull, the sailing center of Roaring Water Bay. This is wonderfully beautiful scenery. Because of the warm Gulf Stream, tender and special plants grow luxuriously in wild and secret gardens like Garnish Island and Dereen. A whole holiday can be planned around garden visits. There are ferry boats out to the islands in Roaringwater Bay - that's another world again. Ferry boats leave from Schull in the summer months and Baltimore throughout the year. There are many beautiful sandy beaches for enjoying picnicking, swimming, body surfing, kayaking and sailing. This is a fabulous place to tour from - and west Cork and Kerry can be explored in day trips from Lisin na Cre. The Beara Peninsula is my favorite, but the choice is endless. Golf courses offer plenty of choice, horse riding can be arranged. Archaeological trips, local hill walking and exploring can be undertaken by anyone. We are real foodies in west Cork with local, organically grown fresh produce sold everywhere and at farmer's markets. So cook well at home and try local meat, fish, cheeses and vegetables and salads with just the very best breads. Or be tempted to eat out by any of the excellent restaurants and pubs.
